What Is Applied Behavior Analysis?

ABA Therapy helps people learn new skills which in turn, improves behavior. It’s often used to help children as part of the treatment of autism spectrum disorder who may also have other developmental disorders.

In ABA Therapy, a therapist will work one-on-one with the child to teach them new skills and reinforce positive behaviors. The goal is to help people improve their quality of life and achieve their fullest potential by producing practical and significant changes in the behavior of individuals from 18 months to 21 years old.

Applied Behavior Analysis is used to treat a wide range of developmental and behavioral disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disability, global developmental delay and other learning and behavioral disorders. ABA principles can be used to increase or decrease behavior. As a discipline, ABA therapy is charged with improving a wide range of skills that are socially significant. What Is The Difference Between A Behavioral Assessment And A Psychological Evaluation?

ABA therapy is a specialized approach that helps individuals, particularly those with autism, develop and improve socially significant behaviors by breaking down complex skills, using positive reinforcement, and working directly with a therapist.

During an initial Behavioral Assessment, a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will assess the patient and conduct observations in the natural environment where the problem behaviors are taking place. The BCBA will identify what the functions of the behaviors are and provide a treatment plan addressing them and recommending interventions and/or replacement skills.

On the other hand, a licensed psychologist conducts a psychological evaluation to assess a child’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning, providing a comprehensive understanding of their strengths and challenges.

A certified, licensed psychologist can diagnose and confirm a diagnosis of ASD, ADHD, Global Developmental Delay, or/any other mental health-related diagnosis and, after that, provide recommendations for ABA therapy services.

ABA therapy focuses on behavior change and skill development, while a psychologist evaluation aims to assess overall functioning and provide recommendations for interventions and support.
