In ABA Therapy, a therapist will work one-on-one with the child to teach them new skills and reinforce positive behaviors. What Is The Difference Between A Behavioral Assessment And A Psychological Evaluation?

ABA therapy is a specialized approach that helps individuals, particularly those with autism, develop and improve socially significant behaviors by breaking down complex skills, using positive reinforcement, and working directly with a therapist.

During an initial Behavioral Assessment, a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will assess the patient and conduct observations in the natural environment where the problem behaviors are taking place. The BCBA will identify what the functions of the behaviors are and provide a treatment plan addressing them and recommending interventions and/or replacement skills.

On the other hand, a licensed psychologist conducts a psychological evaluation to assess a child’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning, providing a comprehensive understanding of their strengths and challenges.

A certified, licensed psychologist can diagnose and confirm a diagnosis of ASD, ADHD, Global Developmental Delay, or/any other mental health-related diagnosis and, after that, provide recommendations for ABA therapy services.

ABA therapy focuses on behavior change and skill development, while a psychologist evaluation aims to assess overall functioning and provide recommendations for interventions and support.
